NJDOT to close Route 1 & 9 Hackensack Bridge this weekend

(Trenton) The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the Route 1 & 9 Hackensack Bridge will be closed this weekend from Friday, June 9 at 10 p.m. until Monday, June 12 at 4 a.m. NJDOT will be installing new barrier gates on the bridge. Concurrently, construction will be ongoing on the North and South curbside to complete electrical wiring for barrier and traffic gate components. The gate replacement project will be completed on June 16.

The detours for Route 1 & 9 traffic are as follows:

  • Route 1 & 9 Truck southbound (pdf 47 kb) traffic will exit onto Route 440 South, bear right and take U-turn onto Route 440 North, travel under the Conrail and PATH railroad tracks, across Newark Avenue and under the Pulaski Skyway (Route 1 & 9). Motorists will then turn left onto Route 7 West and cross over the Hackensack River and bear right onto Fish House Road, which passes under Route 7 and becomes Pennsylvania Avenue. Motorists will then turn left onto Central Avenue, cross Second Street and bear right onto Route 1 & 9 Truck South.

  • Route 1 & 9 Truck northbound (pdf 41 kb) traffic will exit onto the ramp for Hackensack Avenue and turn left onto Hackensack Avenue. Traffic will cross Route 1 & 9 Truck and turn left onto Second Street, cross the Conrail tracks and turn right onto Pennsylvania Avenue, which becomes Fish House Road. Motorists will pass under the PATH railroad tracks and bear left onto Route 7 East over the Hackensack River. Motorists will then bear right onto Newark Avenue and turn right onto Route 1 & 9 Truck South. Finally, motorists will pass under the Conrail and PATH tracks and cross Broadway and follow to the intersection of Route 1 & 9 Truck and Route 440.

All work is weather permitting.

Three Variable Message Signs are in place on Route 1 & 9 North and South and Route 440 North notifying motorists of the upcoming lane closures. Motorists are encouraged to find alternative means of travel over the Hackensack River for the weekend period.
