State of New Jersey seeks grant applicants for Highway Construction Trades Training Program
for Women and Minorities

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri and New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) Commissioner David J. Socolow today announced a notice of grant opportunity for the administration of the 2006 Highway Construction Trades Training Program for Women and Minorities.

The goal of the program is to increase apprenticeship opportunities for women and minorities in building trades normally associated with federal highway construction funding. Such trades include laborers, carpenters, electricians, iron workers, operating engineers, dock builders, truckers, and other skilled craft employment.

Successful applicants will need to achieve targeted outcomes to increase the number of women and minorities in building trades apprenticeships.

Applicants can achieve these outcomes either through recruitment and placement of women and minorities already prepared to pass the apprenticeship test or by recruiting women and minorities and providing them with the skills training necessary to successfully pass apprenticeship tests.

NJDOT is funding the $500,000 program with support from the Federal Highway Administration. Funding may be used for pre-apprenticeship training, case management, support services, participant stipends, and mentoring assistance.

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development will accept applications for the program until 4 p.m. on December 22, 2006. The application process is competitive and applications will be reviewed by a selection committee using a pre-established set of requirements.

The application (pdf 127 kb) for the 2006 Highway Construction Trades Training Program for Women and Minorities is also available at www.state.nj.us/labor.
