NJDOT awards $78.750 million to New Jersey counties

Local aid will fund street improvement projects and relieve property taxes

(Trenton) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will award $78.75 million in County Aid to fund street improvement, rehabilitation and safety projects in all 21 New Jersey counties. The funds are used for infrastructure improvements while also providing property tax relief, new job opportunities and a better quality of life for New Jersey residents.

"By increasing funding for local transportation projects, we are providing essential property tax relief and strengthening our local economies,” said Governor Corzine. “I am proud to see the Transportation Trust Fund provide for the largest capital program in New Jersey history and supply much-needed support to counties.”

Each year, the NJDOT Local Aid Division awards transportation grants to New Jersey’s 21 counties. County Aid funds are appropriated annually by the Legislature for the improvement of public roads, bridges and transportation under county jurisdiction. County programs cover a variety of project types including road resurfacing, rehabilitation or reconstruction and signalization.

“These projects translate into safer local streets, a smoother ride through our neighborhoods and downtowns and financial relief to our communities,” said Kolluri. “County Aid demonstrates the Transportation Trust Fund’s value, not only to our state highways and bridges, but to the local transportation infrastructure that New Jersey families depend upon every day.”

Each county must develop an Annual Transportation Program (ATP) that indicates and estimates the cost of each project to be undertaken. Upon review and approval of the ATP, NJDOT provides up-front funding for the full amount of the County allotment. NJDOT funds approximately 100 county highway and bridge projects each year. NJDOT’s Fiscal Year 2007 County Aid program represents an increase of $11.25 million from last year’s County Aid program.
