NJDOT announces traffic pattern changes on Route 139

Holland Tunnel Approaches project advances

(Trenton)- Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation on May 25 will start a new traffic pattern on the westbound 14th Street Viaduct as part of the Rt. 139 Holland Tunnel Approaches rehabilitation project in Jersey City.

Travel lane access on the westbound 14th Street Viaduct will be as follows:

• The two left lanes will be closed from the viaduct entrance to its midpoint.

• The center lane will travel to the Route 139 lower roadway.

• The right lane will travel to the Route 139 upper roadway and local streets.

• The far right lane will travel to the New Jersey Turnpike exit only and is open only to vehicles that are 11-feet wide or less.

The new traffic pattern will enable NJDOT to reconstruct the two left lanes of the westbound 14th Street Viaduct. Crews will strip the roadway, construct a new concrete deck, repair structural steel and install steel beams beneath the viaducts to ensure structural integrity. The work zone begins at the Jersey Avenue entrance to the viaduct and ends approximately 200 feet ahead at the viaduct’s midpoint.

Motorists should follow variable message signs (VMS) for roadway conditions. These will be positioned north- and southbound on Jersey Avenue in Jersey City and on 14th Street prior to the viaduct entrance. Truck traffic carrying wide loads should also note that restrictions due to lane width will be in effect at this time.

NJDOT provides emergency roadway information, weekly construction schedule updates and real time traffic cameras at www.njcommuter.com. Commuter information is also available through www.trips123.com and on radio traffic reports. A bilingual Community Liaison is onsite to provide project information upon request. Interested parties should call 1.877.NJROADS.

The Route 139 Approaches to the Holland Tunnel Project is a federally-funded, $225 million project that will rehabilitate and reconstruct the existing, structurally deficient 12th and 14th Street Viaducts. NJDOT is working closely with regional stakeholders including the City of Jersey City, New York City, Hudson County, New Jersey Transit, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to ensure the successful execution of this project.
