NJDOT to replace Route 27 bridge in Metuchen

(Trenton) -- Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on Monday, August 25 will begin to replace the Route 27 Bridge between Wakefield Drive and Homestead Road in Metuchen, Middlesex County. The bridge carries Route 27 over the CSX Port Reading Secondary Branch rail line.

“The replacement of the Route 27 Bridge is an investment in safety that exemplifies NJDOT’s commitment to improving the state's aging highway bridges,” said Governor Jon S. Corzine. “The new structure will provide safer driving conditions for residents and commuters in Metuchen.”

Beginning Monday, August 25, NJDOT will replace the existing structurally deficient bridge with a single-span steel girder bridge consisting of one 12-foot lane and one 10-foot shoulder in each direction. New sidewalks will also be installed on Route 27 from milepost 22.75 to milepost 23.10. Construction on the $7.4 million project is scheduled for completion in August, 2011.

Overnight single-lane closures will be necessary during construction. During overnight closures, traffic will be configured in an alternating traffic pattern.

Single lane closures may take place from:

  • Monday to Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning
  • Friday at 9 p.m. to Saturday at 8 a.m.
  • Saturday at 9 p.m. to Sunday at 9 a.m.
  • Sunday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 6 a.m.
  • In order to reduce noise concerns for local residents, additional single lane closures may be utilized between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday thru Friday for utility work.

As part of the project, NJDOT will close Wakefield Drive in Metuchen in fall 2008. NJDOT will provide detour information prior to this closure. Local and emergency access to the properties and businesses along Route 27 and Wakefield Drive will be maintained during construction.

NJDOT has installed Variable Message Signs in the area to inform motorists of the closure. In addition, NJDOT will post directional signs throughout the detour route to guide motorists. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org and www.njcommuter.com for emergency information.
