Route 1&9 northbound ramps to
Delancy Street in Newark to be changed

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the permanent closure of the Route 1&9 northbound Express lanes ramp to Delancy Street in Newark, effective Saturday, May 8. Route 1&9 northbound Express traffic will no longer be permitted to exit at Delancy Street.

NJDOT is permanently closing this ramp by placing concrete construction barrier across the entrance and removing the overhead signs. New overhead signs will be posted to direct Route 1&9 Express traffic heading to Delancy Street to take the crossover to Route 1&9 northbound Local lanes. All trucks must cross over to Route 1&9 Local lanes, because trucks are not permitted on the Pulaski Skyway (Route 1&9 Express).

Following the closure of the Express lanes ramp, NJDOT will begin final paving operations on the newly reconstructed Route 1&9 Local lanes ramp to Delancy Street, as well as a small section of Delancy Street through the intersection. This work, is anticipated to begin Friday, May 14 and will require temporary overnight closures of the Local lanes ramp for approximately five nights.

During the overnight ramp closures Route 1&9 northbound motorists will continue on Route 1 & 9 Local lanes to Route 1&9T northbound to Doremus Avenue to Wilson Avenue to Avenue P to Rutherford Street on to Delancy Street.

The $2.1 million project is replacing the Route 1&9 northbound Local ramp to Delancy Street and installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Route 1&9 northbound Local lanes ramp and Delancy Street in Newark. Construction is scheduled for completion in late June 2010.

Variable message signs will notify motorists of the traffic pattern changes and the permanent ramp closure. Real-time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org.
