Road closures announced in Woodbridge
next two weekends
Route 9 bridge deck over Main Street being replaced

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced upcoming weekend closures on Route 9 and Main Street (CR 514) in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County.

The $2.7 million federally-funded project is replacing the existing, deteriorated Route 9 structure over Main Street with a new pre-cast concrete bridge deck.

NJDOT began repair work to the existing bridge abutments, as well as utility relocations, in June. The new bridge deck has been manufactured off site and is being installed by the contractor over the next two weekends.

The work will require complete closures of Route 9 over Main Street on Friday night, October 15 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day to establish a temporary traffic pattern, and on Sunday night, October 17, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day, to return traffic to the normal configuration.

In order to install the southbound half of the new bridge deck, Route 9 southbound will remain closed the entire weekend with all traffic – one lane in each direction – shifted to the northbound side of the bridge. Route 9 will be reopened fully to traffic by 6 a.m., Monday, October 18.

NJDOT will also require complete closures of Route 9 over Main Street on Friday night, October 22 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day to establish a temporary traffic pattern, and on Sunday night, October 24, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day, to return traffic to the normal configuration.

In order to install the northbound half of the new bridge deck, Route 9 northbound will remain closed the entire weekend with all traffic – one lane in each direction – shifted to the new southbound side of the bridge. Route 9 will be reopened fully to traffic by 6 a.m., Monday, October 25.

During the overnight full closures of Route 9 motorists will be detoured as follows:

  • Route 9 northbound motorists will take the Main Street exit before the bridge to Main Street east to Route 35 northbound to Green Street to Route 9 north.
  • Route 9 southbound motorists will take Gill Lane to Woodbridge Center Drive to Mutton Hollow Road to Route 9 south.

Main Street underneath Route 9 will be closed over both weekend periods, with the following detours in effect:

  • Eastbound motorists will take Woodbridge Center Drive to Route 1 northbound to Route 35 (Saint Georges Street) southbound to Main Street.
  • Westbound motorists will take Route 35 northbound to Route 1 southbound to Woodbridge Center Drive to Main Street.

Access to residences and businesses along Main Street between Woodbridge Center Drive and Route 35 will be maintained.

The use of pre-cast concrete bridge components enables NJDOT to significantly shorten the construction schedule and minimize impacts to traffic on both highways. In addition to the replacement of the existing bridge deck, NJDOT will resurface the bridge approaches on Route 9 in both directions. Construction is scheduled for completion in November 2010.

All work related closures are weather dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary.

NJDOT will employ variable message signs to notify motorists of the upcoming bridge closure. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org
