Main Avenue bridge work resumes over Route 46
in Clifton
Project to improve four Route 46 corridor bridges in Clifton City progresses

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that construction operations will resume this week on the Main Avenue bridge replacement over Route 46 in the City of Clifton, Passaic County.

NJDOT’s $5.9 million project that is replacing and repairing four individual, structurally deficient bridges along and over Route 46 in Clifton, had temporarily shut down construction operations for the winter season.

Construction began last August 2010 at the Main Avenue bridge over Route 46 with NJDOT’s contractor, J.F. Creamer in a joint venture with Sanzari, Inc., shifting all Main Avenue traffic onto the western side of the roadway.

Temporary single-lane closures have resumed during off-peak and overnight hours on Route 46 under Main Avenue. One lane of Route 46 will be maintained at all times during construction.

On March 2, NJDOT will be closing Main Avenue northbound for one night between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following morning to erect structural steel for the new bridge. Main Avenue northbound motorists will be detoured to Piaget Avenue (CR 628) to Lakeview Avenue (CR 624) to Crooks Avenue 9CR 630) to Main Avenue.

The Route 46 over Route 19/Broad Street Bridge will be replaced this spring with a pre-fabricated structure installed by the contractor over two weekend periods. The use of pre-cast bridge components will enable NJDOT to significantly shorten the construction schedule and minimize impacts to traffic on both highways.

The Route 46 bridge decks over Paulison Avenue and the Norfolk Southern railroad line are also being repaired.

All four bridges being addressed by this project were built in the early 1900’s. The project also will resurface mainline Route 46 from Grove Street to east of Paulison Avenue. NJDOT anticipates the project will be completed in late-summer 2011. All work is weather dependent.

Variable Message signs will provide motorists with advance notification of traffic pattern changes. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
