Route 1&9T bridge over Passaic River to be closed overnight this weekend

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced today that the Route 1&9T Bridge over the Passaic River will be closed during one or both weekend night starting tonight to erect temporary roof tresses as part of an ongoing bridge painting project.

NJDOT’s contractor, Liberty-Alpha III JV, will fully close the Route 1&9T movable bridge over the Passaic River connecting Newark, Essex County with Kearny, Hudson County on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following day. If the work is completed tonight, no closure will be necessary tomorrow night.

The following detour and diversionary routes will be in effect during the bridge closure:

• Route 1&9T northbound motorists will be detoured at Doremus Avenue to Raymond Boulevard to Route 21 north to I-280 eastbound to CR-508/Newark-Jersey City Turnpike to Route 7 to Route 1&9T. NJ Turnpike motorists headed to Route 1&9T northbound will also follow this detour.

• Route 1&9 northbound motorists headed to Route 1&9T will continue over the Pulaski Skyway to the Broadway Exit to Route 1&9T.

• Route 1&9T southbound motorists will be detoured to Route 7 to CR-508/Newark-Jersey City Turnpike to I-280 southbound to Route 1&9.

This work has been closely coordinated with other ongoing projects in the area, such as the Route 7 Wittpenn Bridge and Pulaski Skyway interim repair contracts.

Variable message signs will notify motorists of the closures. Real time travel and construction information is available online at www.511nj.org
