South Summit Avenue shift announced for ongoing bridge deck repair in Hackensack
Northbound half of the structure to be reconstructed in next stage

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the next stage of construction is set to begin on the South Summit Avenue bridge deck which runs above all lanes of Interstate 80 and over the southbound lanes of Route 17 in Hackensack, Bergen County.

On Friday, April 20, NJDOT’s contractor, J.F.Creamer & Son Joint Venture with Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc., is scheduled to shift traffic onto the newly reconstructed western (southbound) side of the bridge and establish the new work zone on the eastern (northbound) half of South Summit Avenue. Single-lane closures will be required overnight to complete the stage change, with the new traffic pattern expected to be in place by about 5 a.m. Saturday, April 21.

The bridge deck replacement work is being done in stages so that South Summit Avenue will remain open to traffic during the majority of construction.

The $4.9 million federally funded project will replace the existing, structurally deficient bridge deck, resurface the bridge approaches, install a new signal on the ramp from Route 17 northbound to South Summit Avenue and install new sidewalks, lighting and guiderail.

The Route 17 northbound ramp to South Summit Avenue in Hackensack remains closed to traffic. NJDOT will maintain all available travel lanes on I-80 and Route 17 mainline during daytime and peak period hours. Construction began in March 2011 and is expected to be complete in November 2012.

NJDOT is also replacing the nearby Route 17 northbound bridge deck over I-80. All traffic pattern changes and impacts for both projects are being coordinated.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website real-time travel information.
