Regional concrete roadway repair project begins
in Gloucester and Camden counties
Deteriorated sections of Routes 130, 30 and I-676
to be addressed

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a regional maintenance concrete roadway repair project to address sections of Route 130, Route 30 and Interstate 676 in Gloucester and Camden counties.

NJDOT will make full depth concrete pavement repairs, perform crack-sealing operations and mill and pave deteriorated sections of roadway. The work will be started and completed on one highway at a time before crews move to the next project area.

NJDOT’s maintenance contractor, Richard E. Pierson Construction, began initial construction layout, including sign installation and site mobilization, earlier this week on Route 130 in Gloucester County. Route 130 will be the first highway to be worked on, continuing for a couple months. The contractor is pursuing the possibility of utilizing full closures of half the highway at a time with detours for the Route 130 work.

• Route 130 in both directions from north of Raccoon Creek to just north of Route 44 in Logan Township in Gloucester County.
• Route 130 in both directions from just north of the I-295 split in West Deptford to the vicinity of Park Avenue in Westville in Gloucester County.

Work crews will shift to I-676 later this summer where construction is expected to last for approximately two months.

• Interstate 676 in both directions from south of the Walt Whitman Bridge to the vicinity of Exit 4 (Atlantic Avenue/Kaighns Avenue) in Camden City.
• Interstate 676 in both directions from north of Federal Street to the vicinity of the Seventh Street overpass, before the Ben Franklin Bridge toll plaza in Camden City.

The final stage of construction will address Route 30 in Camden.

• Route 30 in both directions from the western terminus at I-676 to just west of the Federal Street overpass in Camden City.

The project will be performed during off-peak hours under the allowable lane closures schedule, maintaining at least one travel lane in at each location at all times. Access to all businesses will be maintained and dynamic message signs will be utilized to notify motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes.

The work will be coordinated with the Delaware River Port Authority, which maintains the Commodore Barry, Walt Whitman and Ben Franklin bridges. Construction operations will be limited during events at the numerous nearby sporting venues in and around Camden.

The $8.7 million project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings. Each highway will be restriped and new image-detection cameras will be installed at selected intersections to replace the existing underground loop detectors.

NJDOT anticipates project completion in late-fall 2012.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website real-time travel information.
