Route 206 resurfacing project set to begin in Princeton

Project will improve motorist safety
and upgrade curb ramps and drainage inlets

(Trenton) – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a project to resurface about 2.5 miles of Route 206 in both directions and improve several intersections in Princeton, Mercer County.

NJDOT's contractor, Schifano Construction Corp., is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including sign installation this week, which may require daytime shoulder closures. Milling and paving operations will begin later this spring.

The $1.1 million project will resurface Route 206 in both directions with a new surface course of asphalt pavement from Nassau Street to Arreton Road.

The project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, and shoulders. Upgraded roadway striping, drainage inlets, and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades also will be provided as needed. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing roadway surface loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 206.

Route 206 carries one travel lanes in each direction within the resurfacing project limits. Resurfacing work will be performed at night with alternating traffic in order to minimize traffic impacts. Access will be maintained to all businesses and residences along the state highway throughout construction. The project, which was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers, is scheduled for completion by summer 2014.

Variable message signs will notify motorists of all upcoming traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.
