NJDOT to replace Route 10 bridge over
Passaic River connecting East Hanover and Livingston

Eastbound traffic will be detoured during construction

(Trenton) – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a project to replace the Route 10 bridge over the Passaic River, connecting East Hanover in Morris County with Livingston in Essex County.

The $3.5 million, federally-funded project will replace the existing structurally-deficient and functionally obsolete bridge with a new concrete structure including deck, beams, bearings and parapets. In addition to the replacement of the existing bridge, NJDOT will resurface the roadway approaches on Route 10 in both directions.

Route 10 carries two 12-foot wide travel lanes in each direction over the bridge with 6-foot sidewalks. NJDOT has designed the bridge deck replacement work to be performed in stages, closing one side of the bridge for reconstruction at a time. During Stage I, the south half of the bridge (eastbound lanes) will be reconstructed, which is anticipated to last for approximately three months. Eastbound traffic will be detoured for the entire project, while westbound traffic will be maintained. Once complete, the contractor will then close the westbound half of the bridge and shift westbound traffic onto the newly constructed eastbound side.

NJDOT’s contractor, Persistent Construction Inc., is scheduled this week to begin sign installation and work to expand Old Mount Pleasant Avenue eastbound from one lane to two lanes. Old Mount Pleasant Avenue westbound will remain one lane.

Later this month or early next month, the eastbound half of the bridge is scheduled to be closed for reconstruction. At that time, eastbound traffic on Route 10 will be detoured for the entire length of the project. Route 10 westbound traffic will be maintained throughout the project.

Detour

  • Motorists traveling on Route 10 eastbound will be directed to River Road, Old Mount Pleasant Avenue and back onto Route 10 eastbound after Okner Parkway.

  • Local traffic for businesses between River Road and the bridge, and between Okner Parkway and the bridge will be maintained at all times.

  • Temporary traffic signals are planned at intersection of River Road and Old Mount Pleasant Avenue, and at Old Mount Pleasant Avenue and Okner Parkway to improve traffic flow at those intersections during construction.

Dynamic message signs will be deployed on Route 10 to alert motorists of the upcoming traffic pattern changes. NJDOT anticipates the project reaching completion by the end of 2014.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
