NJDOT to shift traffic on Route 33/34 Bridge over Southern Division Railroad
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a traffic shift on Route 33/34 as the project to rehabilitate the bridge over the Southern Division Railroad in Howell, Monmouth County progresses.
On Sunday, October 2, NJDOT Contractor, South State, Inc., will shift traffic in both directions to the existing westbound bridge near mile post 35 on Route 33/34. One lane in each direction will be maintained on the westbound bridge as demolition begins on the eastbound bridge. Reconstruction of abutment walls and the installation of the bridge approach slabs will also proceed.
The $3.5 million federally-funded project will replace the superstructure of the bridge as well as repair minor issues with the substructure. NJDOT expects the project to be completed this winter.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
