Railroad-crossing repairs begin next week
on Hibernia Avenue in Rockaway
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today are reminding motorists the third of four railroad crossing rehabilitation projects that will require road closures and detours is starting next week in Morris County.

Beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, October 24, until 7 p.m. Friday, October 28, the two-way traffic on Hibernia Avenue in Rockaway is scheduled to be closed between Oak Street and Vanderhoof Avenue before the railroad grade crossing. During construction, the ramp from Hibernia Avenue to Route I-80 eastbound will be closed and detoured for the duration of the project. In addition, a temporary one lane road will go across the tracks between Cooper Street and Hibernia Avenue for access to Vanderhoof Avenue only.

From Hibernia Avenue to I-80 eastbound:
Traffic wishing to access Route I-80 eastbound will be directed to Route 46 eastbound, then follow the regular sign indications to Route I-80:
• Traffic from Hibernia Avenue/CR 513/Halsey Avenue will be directed to bear left onto Green Pond Road
• Make a right onto Morris Avenue, which turns into Savage Road
• Make a right onto Franklin Road
• Make another left at the intersection with West Main Street/Route 46 eastbound
• Traffic traveling on East Main Street/CR644 will be directed to stay on CR644 to the intersection with Route 46 eastbound (Follow signs for I-80 eastbound)

The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Rockaway, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
