Route 495 westbound lane and ramp to NJ Turnpike
to be closed overnight for overhead signal work
in Hudson County
Traffic heading to the NJ Turnpike will be detoured for two nights

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the overnight closure for two nights of the left lanes on Route 495 westbound and the Route 495 westbound ramp to the
New Jersey Turnpike for signal installation work in Hudson County.

From 11:00 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next morning, beginning tomorrow night Thursday, February 2 and Friday night, February 3, NJDOT’s contractor Orchard Holdings LLC., is scheduled to close the left lane on Route 495 westbound starting near Pleasant Avenue in Union City. Two lanes will be maintained.

A second left lane will be closed just past the exit for Route 1 & 9 South, closing the ramp from Route 495 westbound to the NJ Turnpike with traffic directed to Route 3 westbound. The closure is necessary for the installation of overhead signals and infrastructure, which is in preparation for an upcoming Route 495 Viaduct Rehabilitation project expected to begin next summer. The following detour will be in effect:

Detour for Route 495 westbound to NJ Turnpike:
The Route 495 westbound ramp to the NJ Turnpike will be closed overnight from 11 p.m. until 4 a.m., Thursday, February 2 and Friday, February 3.

• Motorists traveling on Route 495 westbound to the NJ Turnpike will be directed to stay right for Route 3 westbound Local/Secaucus
• From Route 3 westbound local lanes, motorists will take the Paterson Plank Road exit to the Route 3 eastbound service road
• From the Route 3 eastbound service road, stay right to the exit for the NJ Turnpike entrance.

The $4 million state-funded Information Technology Services (ITS) construction project, which began in September 2015, requires temporary shoulder, lane, and ramp closures due to concrete foundation work and electrical installations. The installations include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) and Electronic Lane Control Signals (LCS) on westbound Route 495. NJDOT is coordinating with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the NJ Turnpike Authority, NJ TRANSIT, and local authorities to advance the project in stages and minimize impacts to motorists. The project, which will require additional closures and detours, is expected to be completed in summer 2017.

Construction signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
