Route 139 westbound lane closures for emergency repairs in Jersey City

Expect delays coming out of the Holland tunnel until further notice

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the closure of three left lanes on Route 139 westbound just past Jersey Avenue in Jersey City for emergency bridge repairs following a fire under the structure last night.

Route 139 westbound was closed at approximately 7:45 p.m. last night, Friday, September 29 because of a fire under the bridge near Coles Street. NJDOT structural engineers evaluated the bridge overnight and determined two right lanes could be reopened safely. The Department is doing further evaluation today to determine the extent of the damage and to begin designing a repair. The three left lanes of Route 139 westbound will remain closed until further notice. Route 139 eastbound toward downtown Jersey City and the Holland Tunnel is not affected.

The Holland Tunnel into New Jersey is open, but delays are expected as the lane closures on 14th Street in Jersey City begin near Grove Street creating a bottleneck approaching Jersey Avenue.

Traffic is still able to access the ramp to the New Jersey Turnpike Extension to I-78; and Route 139 westbound to the Pulaski Skyway and Kennedy Boulevard is open.

Traffic heading to the President’s Cup Golf Tournament at Liberty National Golf Tournament in Jersey City should plan extra travel time. General parking is located at the Newport Mall Garage. VIP and Volunteer parking are located at different locations within Liberty State Park, which may be reached by taking the Turnpike Extension to Exit 14B. For more information on parking or public transportation go to the President’s Cup website.

NJDOT and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey are working together and variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the emergency repairs.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
