Route 1 southbound lane closures this week
to set up long-term traffic shift in Mercer County

Narrowed lanes continue for utility work in Mercer County

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced overnight lane closures on Route 1 southbound in advance of a long-term traffic shift in Lawrence and West Windsor as the Route 1 widening project advances.

Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, May 29, until 6 a.m. tomorrow, and again Wednesday, May 30 from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning, NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., is scheduled to close lanes on Route 1 southbound from Nassau Park Boulevard to Quaker Bridge Road for milling, paving, and striping in preparation for a long term traffic shift.

Traffic will be shifted to the left before the morning commute Friday, June 1 and will be in place until the end of the year. A work zone will be created on the right to accommodate utility relocation. Three lanes and one auxiliary lane will be maintained throughout the duration of the traffic shift. Narrowed lanes continue to be in effect. Motorists should slow down and use caution while driving through the work zone.

The $14 million project will widen Route 1 southbound between Nassau Park Boulevard in West Windsor (milepost 8.69), and Quaker Bridge Overpass in Lawrence (milepost 7.54) in order to improve capacity and safety on the roadway, and to improve access to and from the Mercer Mall and other adjacent businesses. Access to all locations will be maintained throughout the project. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2020.

The southbound roadway includes two express lanes and one local lane providing access to businesses along Route 1. The project calls for widening Route 1 to include a third express lane and will add an auxiliary lane from Nassau Park Boulevard to the Quaker Bridge Mall loop ramp in the local lanes. The project will provide motorists with improved traffic flow and more effective access for residents and travelers. NJDOT will provide more information before any lane closures are scheduled.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
