Stages

The project design proposes five main construction stages that require sub stages. Ramps will be closed and detoured at specific locations as needed. All dates are approximate and subject to change.

Stage 3: mid October 2010 to late Fall 2012

  • Re-establish northbound and southbound to three lanes in each direction;
  • Install permanent guiderails;
  • Close lanes as needed to allow for construction of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) facilities;
  • Full-depth concrete pavement repairs along the southbound roadway; south of milepost 46.5

Stage 5: mid September 2010 to mid October 2010- Completed

  • Establish the normal traffic pattern on the north and southbound roadways (two lanes in each direction);
  • Close lanes as needed to allow construction of the final pavement surface course (2" thick) along 11 miles of the northbound roadway; work will start by mid September and be completed by mid October 2010;
  • Close and detour the northbound ramps (overnight) at Interchanges 47, 52 and 56 while paving I-295 northbound through these interchange areas;
  • Remove emergency pull-offs along the outside of the northbound roadway.

Stage 4: early August 2010 to mid September 2010 - Completed

  • Close and detour the southbound entrance ramp at Interchange 57 and establish interim I-295 traffic pattern, providing two lanes of traffic in each direction traveling on the newly reconstructed northbound roadway separated by a temporary concrete barrier curb, with emergency pull-off areas provided approximately every half mile along the outside;
  • Southbound traffic will be crossed over onto the northbound roadway via diversionary road across the median at the north end of the project (near Interchange 57), and crossed back over onto the southbound roadway via diversionary road across the median located approximately one mile north of Interchange 45;
  • Reconstruct approximately 11 miles of the I-295 southbound roadway and ramps under an accelerated schedule while maintaining access to ramps on the southbound side via diversionary roads across the median;
  • Close and detour the southbound ramps at reconstructed interchanges sub-staged as follows: 4a/Interchange 52; 4b/Interchange 56; 4c/Interchange 47, with no two interchanges closed at the same time;
  • Construct a retaining wall along the outside of the widened southbound roadway under the bridge at Interchange 52;
  • Construct/remove diversionary roads as needed;
  • Construct repairs to southbound bridge decks, deck joints, and approach and transition slabs;
  • Construct beam guide rail and signage (predominantly along the outside of the southbound roadway);
  • Remove emergency pull-offs adjacent to southbound shoulders.

Interim Stage: early August 2010 - Completed

  • Construct/remove diversionary roads as needed;
  • Move the movable concrete barrier on I-295 northbound;
  • Construct emergency pull-offs adjacent to both northbound shoulders;
  • Traffic pattern for:
    • I-295 northbound - Two lanes will be open. Traffic will be on the outside shoulder and outside lane.
    • I-295 southbound - Two lanes will be open. Traffic will be on the outside shoulder and outside lane

Stage 2: mid June 2010 to late July 2010 - Completed

  • Close and detour the northbound entrance ramps at Interchange 45 and establish interim I-295 traffic pattern providing two lanes of traffic in each direction using the southbound roadway separated by a temporary concrete barrier curb, with emergency pull-off areas provided approximately every half mile along the outside;
  • Northbound traffic will be crossed over onto the southbound roadway via a diversionary road across the median at the south end of the project (near Interchange 45), and crossed back over onto the northbound roadway via a diversionary road across the median at the north end of the project (near Interchange 57);
  • Reconstruct 12 miles of the I-295 northbound roadway (less final surface course) and ramps under an accelerated schedule while maintaining access to ramps on the northbound side via diversionary roads across the median;
  • Close and detour the northbound ramps at reconstructed interchanges sub-staged as follows: 2a/Interchange 52; 2b/Interchange 56; 2c/Interchange 47, with no two interchanges closed at the same time;
  • Complete construction of unfinished underdrains/edge drains along northbound shoulder;
  • Construct a retaining wall along the outside of the widened northbound roadway under the bridge at Interchange 52;
  • Construct repairs to northbound bridge decks, deck joints, and approach and transition slabs;
  • Construct permanent beam guide rail and signage (predominantly along the outside of the northbound roadway);
  • Construct temporary guide rail along the outside of the northbound roadway (in preparation for the Stage 4 traffic pattern).

Stage 1: February 2010 to mid June 2010 - Completed

  • Reconstruct both shoulders (asphalt) to grade along the southbound roadway including underdrains/edge drains;
  • Reconstruct (full boxout) the northbound roadway in the vicinity of Interchange 57 and the I-295 northbound exit ramp onto Route 130 at Interchange 57, which will require the ramp to be closed and detoured;
  • Construct emergency pull-offs adjacent to both southbound shoulders;
  • Reconstruct inlets along the southbound shoulders as required;
  • Construct diversionary roads (mainline and ramps), permanent and temporary drainage, and temporary guide rail in the median;
  • Perform clearing along the northbound roadway;
  • Construct underdrain/edge drains along the northbound shoulders in advance of Stage 2 work if necessary by the contractor
