Why is this work necessary?
A.
This section of Route 35 is the primary regional thoroughfare for more than 30,000 vehicles a day. Its safety features, bridge deck, barrier and warning gates are in need of replacement and/or upgrades.
Q.
Are local residents and official involved?
A.
Local residents and officials have been meeting with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) during the planning and development of this project. For example, local officials determined the bridge color.
Q.
What are the access issues for Brielle?
A.
The Higgins Avenue ramp will be closed to traffic during construction. Advance signs will be installed to guide motorists. In addition, variable message signs at each end of the project will provide information to motorists.
Q.
What are the access issues for Point Pleasant Beach?
A.
There are no restrictions to access into Point Pleasant Beach.
Q.
How does this project affect pedestrians and bicyclists?
A.
One sidewalk and access at either end of the project will be maintained throughout the construction process for pedestrians and bicyclists. Signs and barriers will be installed to protect and advise them throughout the project.

What are the cost, start and finish dates?
A.

The $33 million project began in Spring 2004 and is expected to be completed in Spring 2009.

Who is the contractor and resident engineer?
A.
The contractor is Agate Construction, Co., Inc., of Ocean View, NJ. NJDOT's Uprenda Patel is the resident engineer.
Q.
What will NJDOT do to minimize motorist hassles?
A.
NJDOT will maintain two lanes in each direction, with some brief closures scheduled to minimize delays. These will be noted online and on variable message signs within and outside the work area.
