New Jersey Department of Transportation
wins National award

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is proud to announce that the Rutgers Transportation Safety Resource Center (TSRC) in conjunction with NJDOT, was recently presented an award by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Roadway Safety Foundation in Program Planning, Development and Evaluation, for the Plan4Safety: Crash Analysis and Decision Support Tool.

Plan4Safety is an online comprehensive crash analysis software application that supports traffic safety teams in making critical decisions based on data. Plan4Safety offers 144 distinct pieces of data including crash types, injury levels, cell phone use, alcohol impairment, seatbelt use, property damage, driver information, etc

Roadway safety programs are a critical part of the nation’s solutions to saving lives and preventing injuries on our nation’s highways. Of the 37,261 people killed in traffic crashes on U.S. roads in 2008, nearly 59 percent of the fatalities involved a departure from the roadway and 21 percent were at an intersection or intersection-related.

This application gives traffic safety teams valuable accurate and consistent information for improvements to our most high-risk and vulnerable areas. Furthermore, data can be filtered onto an aerial map to help visualize traffic issues and plan ahead for future projects to improve road safety cost effectively.

Over 450 safety professionals are using this tool statewide for safety planning procedures, reports and briefings. Currently, NJDOT, the New Jersey State Police (NJSP), the Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey (BIA-NJ) and several county and local engineering, planning and enforcement agencies actively use Plan4Safety daily.

This great achievement and the future of traffic safety programs begins with the leadership of NJDOT’s Division of Traffic Engineering and Safety and the students of the TSRC. NJDOT takes pride in our accomplishments and innovations in protecting the public.
