Speed Limits For State Roads

Route I - 280
(a) The rate of speed designated for the certain parts of State Highway Route I-280 described in this subsection are hereby established and adopted as the maximum legal rate of speed:
1. In Morris County:
i. In the Township of Parsippany-Troy Hills:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 65 MPH within the corporate limits (approximate mileposts 0.0 to 1.88); thence
ii. In the Township of East Hanover:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 65 MPH within the corporate limits (approximate mileposts 1.88 to 3.32); thence
2. In Essex County:
i. In the Borough of Roseland:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 65 MPH within the corporate limits (approximate mileposts 3.32 to 5.88); thence
ii. In the Township of Livingston:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 65 MPH within the corporate limits (approximate mileposts 5.88 to 6.53); thence
iii. In the Township of West Orange:
(1) For the eastbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 65 MPH between the Livingston Township - West Orange Township corporate line and 4,210 feet east of Laurel Avenue (County Route 634) (approximate mileposts 6.53 to 7.02); thence
(B) Zone 2: 55 MPH between 4,210 feet east of Laurel Avenue and the West Orange Township – City of Orange corporate line (approximate mileposts 7.02 to 10.15); thence
(2) For the westbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 65 MPH between the West Orange Township – Livingston Township corporate line and Pleasant Valley Way (County Route 636) (approximate mileposts 6.53 to 7.49); thence
(B) Zone 2: 55 MPH between Pleasant Valley Way (County Route 636) and the West Orange Township - City of Orange corporate line (approximate mileposts 7.49 to 10.15); thence
iv. In the City of Orange:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH within the corporate limits (approximate mileposts 10.15 to 11.22); thence
v. In the City of East Orange:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH within the corporate limits (approximate mileposts 11.22 to 12.74); thence
vi. In the City of Newark:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH between the City of East Orange – City of Newark corporate line and 500 feet west of West Market Street (approximate mileposts 12.74 to 12.88); thence
(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between 500 feet west of West Market Street and 200 feet west of Route NJ 21 (approximate mileposts 12.88 to 14.38); thence
(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between 200 feet west of Route NJ 21 and the City of Newark  – East Newark Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 14.38 to 14.53); thence
3. In Hudson County:
NOTE: State Highway Route I-280 is under New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) jurisdiction from approximate mileposts 17.25 to 17.85 (end of route).
i. In the Borough of East Newark:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH within the corporate limits (approximate mileposts 14.53 to 14.55); thence
ii. In the Town of Harrison:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the East Newark Borough– Town of Harrison corporate line and 100 feet west of Hamilton Street (approximate mileposts 14.55 to 14.69); thence
(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between 100 feet west of Hamilton Street and the Town of Harrison – Town of Kearny corporate line (approximate mileposts 14.69 to 15.88); thence
iii. In the Town of Kearny:
(1) For both directions of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Town of Harrison - Town of Kearny corporate line and the intersection of US Route I-95W (Toll Plaza) (approximate mileposts 15.88 to 17.25).
(b) The rate of speed designated for the certain parts of State Highway Route I-280 (Collector- Distributor Roads) described in this subsection are hereby established and adopted as the maximum legal rate of speed:
1. In Essex County:
i. In the City of Orange:
(1) For the eastbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 30 MPH between Essex Avenue and 500 feet east of Center Street, except for 25 MPH when passing through the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Guild School zone during recess, when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours; thence
(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between 500 feet east of Center Street and the City of Orange corporate line – City of East Orange corporate line; thence
(2) For the westbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between the City of East Orange corporate line City of Orange corporate line and Essex Avenue; thence
ii. In the City of East Orange
(1) For the eastbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between the City of Orange – City of East Orange corporate line and South Munn Avenue; thence
(2) For the westbound direction of traffic:
(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between 200 feet west of North Arlington Avenue and the City of East Orange – City of Orange corporate line.
