Expedited Inheritance and Estate Procedure for Victims of
September 11th Tragedy

In order to minimize the distraction of tax issues and to assist the families of the victims of the September 11th tragedy, the Division has set up an expedited procedure for the processing of inheritance and estate tax returns and the issuance of tax waivers. The Division will give priority to providing whatever assistance is necessary so that the inheritance and estate tax proceeding may be completed in the shortest time possible.

To assure that the tax return or other form submitted will be processed on the expedited basis the following should be written in red ink on the top of the first page:

"September 11, 2001 -- Terrorist Attack"

The status of the tax return or other form so marked may be obtained by calling the Inheritance and Estate Tax Section of the Division at (609) 292-5033/5035 and indicating that the form was filed on the expedited basis.

If assistance is needed in the preparation and/or filing of a required tax return or other document or regarding any other inheritance or estate tax matter, it may be obtained by:

  • Calling the Division at (609) 292-5033 or (609) 292-5035
  • Visiting the Division's Trenton office
  • Writing to the Division of Taxation, Inheritance and Estate Tax, PO Box 249, Trenton, New Jersey 08695-0249.
