Farms is a Special Place to Visit
Since 1922, the Wightman family has bee growing and selling
fruits and vegetables at their Morris County farm. Today,
various members of the Wightman family and loyal employees
continue the tradition of selling fruits and vegetables grown
on their land at their retail farm market. The Wightman family
is enrolling their farm in perpetuity. With almost 5 million
people within a one-hour drive of the farm, the Wightman's
opened their 150-acre operation to agricultural education
sessions in 1991, so the public would have a opportunity to
see a working family farm. Liz Wightman is a former schoolteacher,
so the transition to open the farm for educational sessions
was not unfamiliar territory. Students can visit the Farm
'n Fun Educational Schoolhouse, where displays of cider making,
pollination, fruit and vegetable variety identification, and
other items are on display. Students can also take a hayride
through the orchards and fields, view soil conservation practices,
see fruits and vegetables at their various stages of growth,
learn about production techniques such as the trellised orchard
system, and stop by the in-session pick-your-own (pumpkins).
After your educational session is complete, the Wightman's
welcome you to use their picnic area so teachers and students
can talk about their on-farm experience.
