"With this grant from FOOD FOR ALL, Farmers Against Hunger will be able to supply more fresh fruits and vegetables to families and individuals whose diets often lack the important nutrients that fresh produce can provide," said Robin McGovern, FAH Director. "In addition, we will be able to provide nutrition education to the recipients, as well as easy recipes for their use." FAH was initiated in the summer of 1996 by a group of concerned farmers who wanted to salvage nutritious produce that is edible, but not marketable, and deliver the produce to those in need. Approximately 10 to 25 percent of the Garden State's produce is unsold due to market demand for unblemished fruits and vegetables or low wholesale prices which make harvest uneconomical. To date, more than 55 farmers have donated produce during the harvest season, with total collection and distribution this year estimated at more than a million pounds. FOOD FOR ALL grants are funded by supermarket shoppers who buy FOOD FOR ALL donation cards along with their groceries. The cards, which are bar-coded like other supermarket items, are conveniently located by the check stands and are available in denominations of $1, $2 and $5. Since 1987 when the program began in two stores in Southern California, FOOD FOR ALL has granted more than $7 million to anti- hunger programs, primarily in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire where the program operates.
