State Agriculture Secretary Art Brown, Jr., today called on his counterparts across the nation to publicize the need for donations of hay and feed grains here in New Jersey.

"Garden State livestock producers have suffered catastrophic losses to their hay and grain crops and, as a result, are already feeding their animals from stockpiles set aside for the coming winter," Brown said. "In the months ahead, they will have to find new sources of feed to make up for the tremendous drought-related losses of hay, pasture and forage crops we're seeing now."

In a letter that went to every agriculture secretary, commissioner and director in the continental United States, Brown noted that "the effects of the drought will be far-reaching, touching every aspect of our economy....I have established a hay relief program [and] I would appreciate your assistance in spreading the word about New Jersey's need for hay donations." Brown also asked for a list of commercial hay providers in case donations fall short of the need.

ANYONE IN THE NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY-PENNSYLVANIA REGION WHO WANTS TO DONATE HAY OR FEED GRAINS, OR TRANSPORTATION SERVICES TO RELOCATE THE DONATIONS, SHOULD CALL 1-877-788-7785. OUTSIDE THE TRI-STATE AREA, POTENTIAL DONATORS OR TRANSPORTERS SHOULD CALL 609-984-4389.
