January 4, 2017 - Christie Administration Announces Award of $6.28 Million in Community Development Block Grants
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, January 4, 2017
TRENTON – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Charles A. Richman today announced the award of $6,285,403 in Small Cities Block Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to 18 municipalities in 8 counties. The grants will benefit approximately 30,000 people, including senior citizens and people with disabilities. Funding is provided by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The DCA’s Division of Housing and Community Resources administers these grant funds for the State of New Jersey.
“Our primary objective is to provide assistance to communities that demonstrate a need for the funds in order to upgrade deteriorated housing stock, expand economic development opportunities, and generally raise the overall quality of life,” said Commissioner Richman. “The Small Cities grants also incentivize towns to revitalize public spaces and public facilities.”
Projects being funded in this year’s grant round range from digging new wells and water pipelines, assuring ADA-compliant access to sidewalks, streets, and Head Start facilities, to street reconstruction and rehabilitation of owner-occupied affordable housing.
The municipalities receiving Small Cities grants design their own projects and funding priorities. These locally developed projects are required to meet at least one of the following criteria: benefit low- and moderate-income persons, aid in the prevention or elimination of slums or blight, or meet an urgent need created by a condition that poses a serious and immediate threat to the health or welfare of the community where other financial resources are not available to meet such needs.
A description of the grant recipients and projects are listed below.
