Funding Will Help Create 23 Rental Units in North Jersey for Low-Income Households
Trenton, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) today announced the award of more than $3 million in federal HOME Housing Production Investment Fund dollars to two New Jersey organizations to create rental housing for low-income families. The federal funding that DCA receives comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
“These projects advance DCA’s mission of creating decent housing in stable, safe neighborhoods so that individuals and families of limited financial means have an opportunity to improve their lives,” said Lt. Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, who serves as DCA Commissioner. “We are proud to contribute significant funds for these affordable apartments. Step by step we are strengthening New Jersey’s position as a great place to live and raise a family.”
Two organizations in two different counties will be constructing a total of 23 rental units for families and individuals with low-income levels. The HOME Program provides subsidy based on need. The HOME Program was created by the National Affordable Housing Act of 1990 with the intent to provide decent affordable housing to lower income households by providing grants and loans to eligible affordable housing developers. DCA receives, distributes, and administers HOME Program dollars for the State. The program provides loans to eligible housing developers to create affordable units through either new construction, rehabilitation, or redevelopment. Occupancy of the units developed under this program is restricted to households at or below 80 percent of Area Median Income as defined by HUD.
Established in 1967, DCA offers a wide range of programs and services that respond to issues of public concern including affordable housing production, fire safety and building safety, community planning and development, local government management and finance, and disaster recovery.
