Self Generator Registration Information

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permits an exemption for applying for A-901 licensure to individuals or companies that generate waste as part of the day to day operations of their business and are referred to as Self Generators.

Here are some common examples of various types of contractors in the construction industry that qualify for a self-generator transporter registration:

  • Roofers

  • Plumbers

  • Electricians

  • HVAC

  • Landscapers

  • Demolition companies

Provided the waste being generated is solely from the employees of the registered self-generator transporter it can be transported to an authorized disposal facility. Self-generator transporters are prohibited from transporting waste generated by companies or persons not directly employed by the self-generator.

Self-Generators are required to register with the DEP Vehicle Registration Unit to receive decals to transport their waste within the State of New Jersey.

What type of work is not included in this exemption?

Self-generators advertising to provide activities listed below which would otherwise obligate them to perform work requiring an A901 license may be considered to be engaged in the business of solid waste.

Common examples of work that is not authorized under the self-generator transporter registration:

  • Clean outs, trash outs, clean ups and junk removal from homes, businesses, offices, garages, barns, sheds, warehouses, etc.;

  • This includes property maintenance and preservation contracts that require a clean out of waste left behind by the previous tenant or owner of the property being serviced;

  • Allowing other companies or persons to deposit waste they generated into a self-generator’s vehicle or container to be hauled away by the self-generator; and

  • Transporting waste from a demolition job that was not performed by the employees of the self-generator transporter
