DEP Offers Smoke-Free Zones
at Island Beach State Park
(04/94) BERKELEY TOWNSHIP -- New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner
Bradley M. Campbell today announced the implementation
of a new pilot program at Island Beach State Park to provide
a smoke-free section of the beach for visitors.
"This program offers an alternative for visitors
who prefer a smoke-free environment while at the beach," said
Commissioner Campbell. "We encourage input from the
public so that we can provide the best beach experience
for all of our park patrons."
Over the next few weeks Island Beach will offer a section
of Bathing Beach 1 as a smoke-free beach. Park patrons
are still free to smoke in the areas that are not designated
as smoke-free zones. Bathing Beach 2 will have no restrictions
on smoking.
Signs delineating the smoke-free areas will be posted
on the beach, as well as receptacles for the proper disposal
of cigarette butts.
The smoke-free zones will be in effect through the end
of the swimming season.
The DEP encourages public comments and suggestions to
better serve our park visitors. Comments should be sent
to the Island Beach State Park, PO Box 37, Shore Road Route
35 South, Seaside Park, NJ 08752
