DEP COMMISSIONER
ISSUES STATEMENT
IN RESPONSE TO EPA STAFF PAPER CALLING FOR TOUGHER AIR POLLUTION
STANDARDS
(05/92) TRENTON -- In response to a recent U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) staff paper recommending stronger particle
pollution standards, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell today issued the following statement:
"The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently
announced staff recommendations in support of stronger standards
for particle pollution, which further validates the prudent
and progressive steps New Jersey is taking to protect the health
of its residents - particularly children - from the harmful
effects of fine-particle pollution from diesel engines.
The Department of Environmental Protection and the legislature
have been working together on a series of initiatives to reduce
fine-particle pollution from diesel exhaust. Soon, New Jerseyans
will have the opportunity to have their voices heard on this
important issue through a ballot question on Election Day on
Nov. 8."
