New Jersey Geological Survey DGS00-2 Areas of Counties and Municipalities in Water Regions and Watershed Management Areas for New Jersey METADATA 1. IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION 1.1 CITATION Areas of Counties and Municipalities in Water Regions and Watershed Management Areas for New Jersey N.J. Geological Survey Digital Geodata Series DGS00-2 Compiled by Jeffrey L. Hoffman, March 2000 Trenton, N.J 08625 1.2 DESCRIPTION 1.2.1 ABSTRACT DGS00-2 is a computerized spreadsheet in a Microsoft Excel workbook format that provides a tabular summary of how the area in New Jersey is divided among 21 counties, 582 municipalities, 5 water regions, and 20 watershed management areas by the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection Geographic Information System. This workbook consists of 4 worksheets containing 5 tables. The worksheets include: 1) metadata, 2) the areas of each county and municipality within each water region and watershed management area; 3) the fractional percentage of each municipality and county with respect to each water region and watershed management area; and 4) a list of Federal listing and State water-supply reference codes for the set of counties and municipalities. 1.2.2. DATA QUALITY INFORMATION 2.1 NAME OF DATA munwmasarea.xls 2.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE TYPE OF DATA The MS Excel Workbook consists of three worksheets containing five tables: Worksheet Name Description --------------- --------------------- WMA&MUN Areas Area (square miles) of each municipality and county in each water region (Table 1) and watershed management area (Table 2) WMA&MUN Percentages Percentage of each municipality and county in each water region (Table 3)and watershed management area (Table 4) Codes Worksheet listing the county, Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) code for New Jersey municipalities, and Water-Supply Plan municipality codes (Table 5) Metadata This metadata file 2.3. DATA SOURCE Watershed managament areas are from the NJDEP Geographic Information System (GIS) reference coverage (DEPWMAS). Municipal areas and FIPS codes are from the NJDEP GIS reference theme for New Jersey municipalities (STMUN). Please contact the NJDEP Bureau of Geographic Information Systems & Analysis (www.state.nj.us/dep/gis/) or the Division of Watershed Management (www.state.nj.us/dep/watershedmgt/) for information and availability of these reference themes. 2.3.2. DEVELOPMENT OF MUNWMASAREA.XLS Areas were calculated using the ArcView (v.3.2) GIS software with the XTOOLS geoprocessing extension. STMUN and DEPWMAS were summarized on the FIPS and WMA fields respectively, to create two derivative GIS themes. Polygon areas for these two new shapefiles were updated and then joined using the union command into a third shapefile. Polygon areas were updated again. The resulting database file was opened using MS Excel. Areas (sq. mi) were calculated for each unique combination of county and municipality with water region and watershed management area using the Excel pivot-table report-query functions. The percent of each county and municipality were also calculated. 2.4 DATA ORGANIZERS Jeffrey L. AUTHOR NOTES The NJDEP Watershed Management Areas extend offshore along the Atlantic margin about three miles beyond municipal boundaries as defined by the NJDEP. The management areas also cover parts of the Raritan and Delaware Bays beyond the municipal boundaries. The entry for 'offshore areas' in the tables indicates how much of each water region and watershed management area is located outside the municipal boundaries as defined by the NJDEP STMUN reference theme.
