Homeschool Naturalists: Evergreens

For six to ten year-olds in first through fifth grades with some ability to read and write. Why are evergreens ever green? (And are they really?) How can you tell them apart? Come find out! We'll take a short walk (about a half mile) near the Interpretive Center to observe and identify a variety of evergreen species and then we'll head inside to make some evergreen art. These hands-on activities provide homeschoolers with opportunities to explore the natural world and interact with their peers. Fees: $5.00 per child. Must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required 24 hours before the program is scheduled to begin. Fees must be paid in full before the start of the program. Winter Green Walk

Adults/Children ages 8 and up. Join us for a walk focusing on the characteristics of different kinds of evergreens and learn how they have adapted to survive harsh environments. We’ll also keep a lookout for bright spots of festive red along the way. If the Kuser Natural Area is accessible, we’ll take a 2-mile walk around the cedar bog. If it isn’t, we’ll take a shorter walk around portions of the historic day use area and Lake Marcia. Meet at the entrance to the Cedar Swamp Trail (at the gate at the far end of the Cedar Swamp Picnic Area). If this area is inaccessible due to snow or ice, plan to meet at the Park Office and we’ll travel from there to a suitable parking area.
