Step 3: Becoming Permanently Certified

Standard Teaching Certificate

The standard certificate is a permanent certificate issued to a teacher who has met all requirements for state certification. Individuals holding a standard CTE certificate are eligible to teach NJDOE-approved CTE programs of study in the area of their certificate endorsement. The district/school will request the issuance of a standard teaching certificate upon successful completion of the Provisional Teacher Process (PTP).

Note: A candidate cannot apply for the standard certificate; this certificate is requested by a school district.

To receive a standard certificate, the following must occur:

  1. District/school verified mentoring completion in NJEdCert.
  2. District/school submitted the final summative ratings for each school year in NJEdCert.
  3. The CTE Certificate of Eligibility Program Provider (CE EPP) verified the educator has demonstrated proficiency in the use of English language and mathematics by meeting one of the following:
    • Pass a Commissioner-approved assessment of basic skills. Currently, the only approved assessment is the Praxis Core Academic Skills with passing scores as follows: Reading: 156, Math: 150, Writing: 162; or
    • Demonstrate a score on the SAT, ACT, or GRE at or above the cut score for the year in which the exam was taken (see cut scores below); or
    • Hold an occupational license or certification or;
    • Hold an industry certificate or registration;
    • Complete a portfolio of work products through an approved educator preparation program, as approved by the employing school district’s superintendent, or the superintendent’s designee; or
    • Hold a master’s or terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  4. The CTE CE EPP submitted the appropriate Verification of Program Completion form.
  5. Educator completed an Oath of Allegiance and submitted payment in NJEdCert once recommended by district/school.
