Step 3: Becoming Permanently Certified
Standard Teaching Certificate
The standard certificate is a permanent certificate issued to a teacher who has met all requirements for state certification. Individuals holding a standard CTE certificate are eligible to teach NJDOE-approved CTE programs of study in the area of their certificate endorsement. The district/school will request the issuance of a standard teaching certificate upon successful completion of the Provisional Teacher Process (PTP).
Note: A candidate cannot apply for the standard certificate; this certificate is requested by a school district.
To receive a standard certificate, the following must occur:
- District/school verified mentoring completion in NJEdCert.
- District/school submitted the final summative ratings for each school year in NJEdCert.
- The CTE Certificate of Eligibility Program Provider (CE EPP) verified the educator has demonstrated proficiency in the use of English language and mathematics by meeting one of the following:
- Pass a Commissioner-approved assessment of basic skills. Currently, the only approved assessment is the Praxis Core Academic Skills with passing scores as follows: Reading: 156, Math: 150, Writing: 162; or
- Demonstrate a score on the SAT, ACT, or GRE at or above the cut score for the year in which the exam was taken (see cut scores below); or
- Hold an occupational license or certification or;
- Hold an industry certificate or registration;
- Complete a portfolio of work products through an approved educator preparation program, as approved by the employing school district’s superintendent, or the superintendent’s designee; or
- Hold a master’s or terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- The CTE CE EPP submitted the appropriate Verification of Program Completion form.
- Educator completed an Oath of Allegiance and submitted payment in NJEdCert once recommended by district/school.
