School No. 1
The mission of Elementary School No. 1 is to provide students with a comprehensive education in a safe and nurturing environment adhering to the goals of the Core Curriculum Content Standards. The academic program is the first priority with planning and implementation designed for an extensive sequence of studies to accommodate the abilities of elementary students.
School No. 1 enjoys an outstanding reputation for the quality of our instructional programs, the professionalism, and dedication of our faculty, the academic achievement of our students, and the involvement of our parents. School No. 1 honors and celebrates its diversity with 25 languages spoken at home. Our constructivist approach to education best addresses the needs of our diverse student population, based upon the strong belief that all children can learn. We celebrate our success in meeting the needs of all of our students, and, as such, fifty percent of our classrooms are collaborative. As such, staff members constantly research and implement best practices to meet the needs of all students to best support their cognitive and effective progress. Data analysis drives instruction where all students' progress is tracked to ensure that individual instructional needs are being met. Included in our outstanding academic program, our specialists provide extensive music skills, before school physical activity through our Boks program along with a well rounded physical education program including nutrition; technology integration through our library/media program and art history as well as hands on approach in our artistic skills practice. School No. 1 offers an intensive reading program called "Smart Readers", providing intense instruction for first and second grade students who are struggling.
School No. 1 fosters, through our dedicated staff, an environment that allows students to feel safe, secure, and comfortable taking risks, while meeting our rigorous academic standards. The Common Core State Standards support our work with cross-disciplinary literacy expectations. Our literacy programs are closely monitored through benchmark assessments while instilling in our students the love of reading and writing. Recognizing that reading and writing is a complex process; instruction is delivered in a variety of formats to include whole class, small group, and individualized instruction. Our classroom protocol is research-based allowing students to interact with new knowledge deeply. Our math and science curriculum addresses the importance of developing our students' capacity to think. The implementation of our FOSS (Full Option Science System) Science curriculum supports the need to provide effective science opportunities for our diverse learners. Content and process is learned through hands-on investigations. Our students learn through authentic, real-life situations, developing their skills to produce results that support their development towards work-place readiness.
Our student-centered philosophy continues through our special area course offerings. Our students have been acknowledged through Presidential physical fitness challenges, our diversity is honored through bilingual and world language classes, and the varied needs of students are addressed through before, during, and after school tutoring as well as a well-developed Gifted and Talented program.
The concern for the development of the whole student is also shown in programs such as DARE, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), the Buddy Program (sixth grade students working with Kindergarten students), Safety Patrol and peer mediation. Academic and social development is recognized and developed through multiple means and curriculum areas. Critical to our success is our excellent relationship with the community. The Fort Lee Education Foundation provides additional resources for classroom teachers by providing the financial means of technology applications such as BrainPop, Raz Kids etc. to supplement the already outstanding programs that we offer. The School No. 1 PTA also supports programs to enhance the awareness of equality, tolerance and respect. In addition, after-school enrichment programs have begun this year providing students the opportunity to explore a variety of interests including; math, robotics, art, drama, technology and chess clubs. We believe that great instruction comes from authentic experiences brought into our school as well as going outside the walls of our buildings.
Our Veterans have graciously shared their first hand experiences with our students, who in turn, at various events, have honored them. Our parents work together with School No. 1 with the best interest of students as our focus. Our parents have provided a myriad of educational opportunities including cultural events, personal safety courses, and social opportunities for our students. Maintaining a high-quality school is a job for the entire community. School No. 1's expanding enrollment challenges all of us in developing our students into productive citizens. We will continue to meet this challenge with the active support of our administration, staff, and community. After all, School No. 1 is where "Students Come First."
