Tennis Legends Play in New Jersey
June 2003

Tennis greats John McEnroe and Boris Becker played an exhibition match at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton on March 3, 2003. They provided fans with an entertaining tennis experience as they competed in a best of three sets singles match and a doubles match with local celebrity players. Both McEnroe and Becker are members of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and often play in exhibition matches around the world. Becker beat McEnroe, winning the match in the third set, but McEnroe went on to win the doubles match.

The Legends of Tennis match was promoted as a revival of their famous 1987 Davis Cup contest between the United State and Germany that was held in Hartford, Connecticut. In that match, Becker and McEnroe played for more than six hours before the German prevailed 4-6, 15-13, 8-10, 6-2, 6-2.

Both players also auctioned off various items, including their tennis racquets, to benefit the National Junior Tennis League of Trenton (NJTL - Trenton), which was co-founded 30 years ago by Arthur Ashe.
