Question #1 - Record Keeping

After the death of the animal, a licensed veterinarian is required to retain all records and radiographs pertaining to the animal for:

Two years from the date of the last entry

Five years from the date of the last entry

Seven years from the date of the last entry

The veterinarian may dispose of the records upon learning of the animal’s death.

N.J.A.C. 13:44-4.9 sets forth standards for patient records. N.J.A.C. 13:44-4.9(e) states that all records and radiographs on patients shall be retained for a period of five years from the date of the patient’s last visit. When the record indicates the death of the patient, written records and radiographs shall be retained for three years from the date of last entry.
