Sea Girt, NJ - Acting
Governor Donald T. DiFrancesco, Attorney General John J. Farmer,
Jr. and Colonel Carson J. Dunbar, Jr., Superintendent of the New
Jersey State Police, today hosted commencement exercises for 63
high school seniors from across the state as they completed a week-long,
police-oriented educational program with the 57th New Jersey State
Police Trooper Youth Week training class.
"I hope this week
has served both to inform you and inspire you. We need good people
to join this noble profession and make a great police force even
better. We need brave, well-educated, and dedicated people to carry
on a tradition of excellence," the acting Governor told the
Trooper Youth cadets.
"The crime rate in New
Jersey has been dropping for the past several years, reaching its
lowest point in more than 25 years. While the tough laws we've passed
in the Legislature have undoubtedly helped reduce crime, the backbone
of crime prevention will always be good, solid law enforcement.
That means we need talented officers tomorrow as much as we rely
on them today."
Attorney General Farmer
said that the Trooper Youth program can be a stepping stone for
young people who are considering a career in law enforcement. "You
represent some of the best and brightest young people in New Jersey.
And, although you will not be faced with making a final career choice
for a few years, your participation this week show respect for the
law and a recognition of the critical role law enforcement plays
in ensuring the public's safety."
Colonel Dunbar noted
that for more than 30 years, the New Jersey State Police Trooper
Youth Program has led the way in preparing young men and women for
a career in law enforcement and that the State Police Trooper Youth
program has become an important stepping-stone for youngsters seeking
a career in law enforcement and police work. Additionally, the simulated
police training exercises taught throughout the week provide the
students with a keen awareness and understanding of the tough standards
required of police.
"I applaud their
effort and encourage each and every Trooper Youth to continue his/her
education and, upon graduation from college, to take up the challenge
that is a career with the New Jersey State Police. I am extremely
honored to be part of their accomplishment," Dunbar said.
Sponsored by the Department
of Law & Public Safety, the Division of State Police and the
Department of Education, the Trooper Youth Week training program
provides young people interested in a law enforcement career with
a "real life" police experience.
The "future"
troopers of the 57th New Jersey State Police Trooper Youth Week
training class participated in a wide range of activities - activities
which simulate the actual police recruit training experience. The
Trooper Youth cadets were exposed to the regimen of reveille, roll
call, academic classes, a tough physical fitness training and conditioning
regimen and actual police field exercises.
As part of the training
program, State Police instructors placed special emphasis on exposing
the Trooper Youth cadets to the unique pressures and problems associated
with illegal drug use, teen violence and the aftermath of violent
and deadly acts. Lectures and motivational speakers exposed the
Trooper Youth cadets to the peer pressures associated with the personal
and social consequences of substance abuse and conflict resolution.
The students also learned about New Jersey's vast cultural diversity
and the constitutional guarantees afforded all citizens while attending
classes with actual State Police recruit trainees.
Additionally, the Trooper
Youth cadets explored various practical and theoretical areas of
police science, including the history and functions of the New Jersey
State Police; crime scene investigation procedures; firearms safety;
CPR and lifesaving techniques; motor vehicle law and safety; the
rapidly expanding use and application of computers and high-technology
in police work; teenage drinking and driving and use of the breathalyser
and overall exposure to police work as a career.

New Jersey State Police Trooper Youth Week graduating class is listed
