North Bergen MVC Center Reopens Feb. 20

Freehold Closed Due to Staffing Limitations

TRENTON – The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) today announced that the North Bergen Licensing Center will be reopening Saturday, Feb. 20, while the Freehold Licensing Center will be closed Saturday due to staffing limitations unrelated to COVID-19.

North Bergen will be resuming regular operations following the completion of staff quarantine and full COVID-19 cleaning.

Freehold will be closed only on Feb. 20, and open for regular operations on Monday, Feb. 22.

MVC Centers Reopening

The following MVC Centers will reopen after full COVID-19 cleaning and the completion of staff quarantine. They had to close because an employee tested positive for COVID-19 at each location, and are scheduled to reopen on these dates:

Turnersville Vehicle Center

Monday, Feb. 22

Jersey City Vehicle Center

Wednesday, Feb. 24

Paterson Regional/Licensing Center

Friday, Feb. 26

Wallington Vehicle Center

Saturday, Feb. 27

Delanco Licensing Center

Saturday, Feb. 27

MVC Online

Many customers can skip the trip to the MVC by going online. Nearly 30 different Motor Vehicle Commission services and transactions are available for customers online at NJMVC.gov. This includes most standard license and registration renewals and replacements.

More than 80% of standard license renewals and 90% of vehicle registration renewals are now being completed without an in-person MVC visit.

MVC In-Person

Walk-ins are only allowed for first time licenses/IDs/permits, name changes, and red decals at Licensing Centers.

Other MVC transactions that can’t be completed online require an appointment that customers need to schedule at NJMVC.gov

Scheduling an Appointment

Appointments at Licensing and Vehicle Centers must be scheduled at NJMVC.gov. Additional appointments are being added daily, overnight, and up to 60 days in advance.

Appointments are widely available for nearly all transactions. Over the past month, the MVC has steadily increased the total number of available appointments, and more than doubled the daily appointments for license and registration renewals.

Appointment Cancellations

Any appointments canceled due to an MVC location closure must be rescheduled on the website. Customers will get an email when their appointment has been canceled.

If a customer can’t make their appointment, it should be canceled using the guidance in the confirmation email sent by the MVC upon booking, in order to open the appointment for others.

Renewals

License/ID and registration renewals that can’t be completed online require an appointment. Renewals are not available on a walk-in basis.

Check Your Documents

Customers should check the expiration date on their documents and renew early. Most licenses can be renewed online three months prior to expiration and most registrations two months prior to expiration. If you can’t renew online, make an appointment when you’re within the renewal window. Don’t wait until you’re up against an expiration date!

Know Before You Go

Before all MVC appointments or walk-in visits, customers should log on to NJMVC.gov to check whether the agency might be closed because of an employee testing positive for COVID-19, or for any other reason. The MVC has 39 locations to serve customers throughout the state.
