Trooper Saves Crash Victim in Puerto Rico

Caguas, Puerto Rico - A New Jersey State trooper deployed to Puerto Rico as part of Operation New Jersey P.R.I.D.E, the Puerto Rico Integrated Deployment Effort, rescued a man trapped inside his car after crash yesterday in Caguas.

At 8:20 a.m., troopers and officers assigned to a stationary post were notified that a car ran off the road and crashed into a Palm tree in a nearby business area.  When Detective Sergeant Carlos Rodriguez arrived, the driver was unconscious and trapped inside the car.  After several attempts to wake the driver were unsuccessful, DSG Rodriguez used his expandable baton to break the front passenger side window to get inside the car.

Once inside, DSG Rodriguez was able to revive the driver and help him from the car.  He then brought him to a safe location, called for advance life support, and ensured the driver’s airway remained clear, because he was suffering from a medical condition at the time, which was a contributing factor in the crash.

DSG Rodriguez was recognized by the Puerto Rico Police Department later that day for his quick thinking and life-saving actions. Pictured is DSG Rodriguez being thanked by Hector M. Pesquera, Secretary of the Department of Public Safety of the Government of Puerto Rico.
