Fugitive Wanted in Carjacking
Captured by Bass River Troopers
Dover Township - Trooper Brian Herr, Bass River Station became suspicious while checking a disabled vehicle on the Garden State Parkway at milepost 84.5 southbound, Dover Township. The driver appeared to be a sleeping motorist, but Trooper Herr through diligent investigation was able to determine that the Connecticut registered 1990 red Oldsmobile was wanted in connection with several crimes committed in the Township of Orange, Connecticut. The vehicle was stolen during the commission of a carjacking and sexual assault. The carjacking and sexual assault occurred on the evening of Saturday July 24, 2004.
Trooper Herr with the assistance of fellow Bass River Trooper Ralph Kohlhepp arrested the driver Brent L. Johnson, 31, 590 Wilmont Ave., Bridgeport, Connecticut. Johnson was charged with receiving stolen property and being a fugitive from justice. Dispatchers informed the arresting State Troopers of the warrant and criminal information.
Evidence linking the suspect to the crimes has been retrieved from the Alexander Hamilton Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike. Connecticut law enforcement officials are en route to New Jersey to assist in the investigation.
Johnson has been remanded to the Ocean County Jail on a fugitive warrant pending a court date.
