Meet AQES’ 2016 Interns
2015
Air Quality, Energy and Sustainability had two summer interns for 2015.
Air Quality:
Ashley-Lynn Chrzaszcz completed a joint internship with the DEP’s Division of Air Quality and Office of Economic Analysis to examine the economic impact of New Jersey's ozone non-attainment designation. Ashley-Lynn’s research focused on the impacts in 1990 (before the effects of the Clean Air Act Amendments took root); current data for where New Jersey is now; and where New Jersey hopes to be by 2025. The results of Ashley-Lynn’s research will be used as the building blocks for understanding ozone's economic cost to New Jersey. Her final report outlines methodology, results and assumptions made, and concludes by highlighting areas in need of further research and recommendations for next steps.
Environmental Radiation:
Adriana Morocho Torres completed an internship with the DEP ’s Bureau of Environmental Radiation to:
- Prepare a descriptive inventory of all radiological equipment (e.g., personnel protection and sampling equipment) and instrumentation currently in storage, and assist in the organization of this equipment and instrumentation to enable a more efficient response to emergencies.
- Organize the contaminated site files and update site summary sheets (i.e., summary sheets that explain where the site is, the contaminants of concern, and the current status of the site).
Adriana’s first task is critical to understanding DEP’s current radiological equipment and instrumentation needs, and provides invaluable information in an emergent situation. The second task helps DEP’s Bureau of Environmental Radiation provide technical support to DEP’s Site Remediation Program for sites contaminated with radioactive material. Since complete evaluations of these sites can take up to 15 years, with much correspondence between DEP and the parties responsible for the sites, Adriana’s work is important to help keep DEP’s reference materials accurate and up-to-date. |
