Underground Storage Tank Certification

REGULATORY COURSES REQUIRED FOR LICENSE RENEWAL

Regulatory courses for individuals renewing their certification are available through:

Check here for a list of all the upcoming dates and locations

There are two types of Underground Storage Tank (USTs) systems that require certification of individuals and business firms in order to do work related to the USTs: Regulated USTs and UST systems and Unregulated Heating Oil Tank (UHOT) systems.  Within this page you will find and information separated for regulated and unregulated USTs.  Although it may appear to be duplicative information in some instances, the intent is to prevent any confusion in what is required to obtain individual and business firm certification.

New Exam Procedure:

Effective immediately, all UST Exams will only be administered through the International Code Council (ICC). Applicants may register and pay for an ICC UST category exam at http://www.iccsafe.org. Upon accessing the ICC website, select "Education & Certification" and then choose "Exam Catalog." Here applicants can search for license category exam(s) of their choice.

  • Scroll down to "Catalog Search"
  • Type: Select "UST/AST" from the dropdown menu
  • Category/Trade: Select "National UST/AST" from the dropdown menu (do NOT select STATE)
  • Click "Search"
  • Select the license category exam of your choice and register

The ICC individual exam fee of $80.00 is due at the time of registration. Applicants will be given the opportunity to take the closed book, computer-based exam on a date and time of their preference. For additional information about ICC and/or the exam registration process, please contact ICC at 888-ICC-SAFE (888-422-7233) and press 0 or you may email your questions to ICC at carecenter@iccsafe.org.

In addition, please be reminded that final UST licensing is based upon submission and DEP approval of a complete UST exam application including required experience along with the $50 review fee for each UST category AND proof of the applicable ICC passing exam score(s).

Regulated UST systems:

The New Jersey Underground Storage Tank (UST) regulations (NJAC 7:14B Subchapter 13) require that all personnel who install, close, test, and design corrosion protection systems for USTs must be certified.  Those certified in Subsurface Evaluation may continue to provide services at UST sites that had discharges occurring prior to November 4, 2009.   All owners/operators of USTs that are removed or closed in-place after November 4th, 2009 need to retain the services of a Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) to conduct subsurface evaluations and remediation. Information regarding the LSRP program can be found at https://www.nj.gov/dep/srp/.  As of May 7, 2012 LSRP’s are required for all discharge investigations.

43. How do I renew my business firm’s certification.
Approximately 80 days prior to your business firm’s certification, you should receive a renewal invoice and form ADM-275A.  The ADM-275A is also available on the web site.  You should review the requirements for certification to insure the business firm meets them.  You must return your invoice with your renewal fee, complete and submit, in its entirety, form ADM-275A for a renewal and include a current copy of your insurance. Please note that the business firm’s information will be updated based on the information provided on the ADM-275A.

44. How long will it take before I receive my business firm’s renewed certification?
Normally, once the business firm’s check is cashed you should receive the certificate within two weeks provided you have submitted form ADM-275A along with proof of insurance and there are no discrepancies/inconsistencies/errors on the form.  You will be notified, in writing, what issues need to be resolved in order to be issued a certificate.

45. Are there instances when I don’t need to send payment with the ADM-275A form?
Yes, only when you make a modification or change to information that does not appear on the business firm’s certificate.  For example: a change of telephone number.
