To pay homage to the great work being done in our state and to promote local agriculture, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture honors those who have excelled in providing Jersey Fresh produce to school children in our state. They are the Top Tomatoes in the Jersey Fresh Farm to School Program!
Sal Valenza is the Regional Director for NuWay Concessionaires, the Food Service Director for West New York Schools and the President of the New Jersey School Nutrition Association. Sal has more than 20 years of experience in school food service, working in self-operated districts in addition to large and small management companies. Sal was instrumental in leading West New York Memorial High School to achieving Gold level recognition from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's Healthy Schools Program. In addition, under Sal's direction, Memorial High School, West New York Middle School, Harry L. Bain School and Public School numbers 1,2,3,4, and 5 achieved the Bronze Level of the HealthierUS School Challenge Award, a program of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative. Sal was chosen as the New Jersey and Northeast Region's Outstanding Director of the Year by the State and National School Nutrition Associations. Sal also was recognized as one of 21 outstanding individuals across the nation as a National Champion for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
Sal has been instrumental in leading the charge to bring more local fruits and vegetables to school cafeterias across New Jersey and West New York Schools have been a model for the State on using local produce. In October 2015, West New York Middle School held a "No Boxes, No Bottles, No Bags" lunch event to celebrate National Farm to School Month and Food Day, where locally sourced, scratched cooked meals were prepared for the students and faculty. Sal is passionate about whole school reform relating to health and wellness in our schools with equal focus on nutrition, nutrition education, physical and health education and curriculum integration.
