Joe Njoroge, Food Bank of South Jersey
Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer
Our state's tomatoes are nationally recognized as being among the best in the world. To pay homage to the great work being done in our state and to promote local agriculture, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture honors those who have excelled in providing Jersey Fresh produce to school children in our state. They are the Top Tomatoes in the Jersey Fresh Farm to School Program!
Joe Njoroge is passionate about hunger issues especially when it comes to the most vulnerable and children are a special priority. As Joe says, “Children are our future and we need to equip them with all the tools necessary for success and that starts with good, healthy and nutritious food”.
In the last four years, Joe has overseen the Summer Food Service Program at the Food Bank of South Jersey grow over 700%. This year, they will strive to feed over 7,000 children over the Summer and serve more than half a million meals. In addition, the Food Bank has launched a mobile bus, the Bus Stop Café which will serve as a mobile dining room to further increase access to food for kids. The program will include free activities and every child will receive an age appropriate book through a partnership with First Book.
New Jersey has a great variety of fresh produce and the Food Bank strives to make locally available fruits and vegetables throughout the South Jersey area to people who struggle to put food on the table. “We are excited about our partnerships that support Farm to Summer activities and hope to make fresh produce available to everyone in our wonderful State.”
