2002 Fish Art and Writing Contest Winners

The winning entrants in the Division's Second Annual Fish Art and Writing Contest were honored when trout season opened on Saturday, April 13, at the Pequest Trout Hatchery & Natural Resource Education Center. The contest encourages children in grades 4 through 8 to learn about New Jersey's fish and express their knowledge through artwork that depicted the fish in its habitat and a short biography of the fish.

Governor James E. McGreevey and DEP Commissioner Bradley M. Campbell were on hand to personally congratulate each of the winners as they fished in the facility's Fishing Education Pond. Division Director Bob McDowell was also on hand and spent time fishing with the youngsters. The pond, which is stocked with oversized rainbow trout, is normally open only to scheduled fishing education programs. Most of the winners and their family members caught fish, many in the 5 to 10 pound category.

After fishing, the winners received plaques and fishing equipment at an awards luncheon. The New Jersey Council of Trout Unlimited sponsored the awards luncheon and winners' awards.

The contest is announced each fall and entries must be received by mid-March. Kids can get on a list to receive a notice about next year's contest by calling the hatchery at 908-637-4125 or by sending an email with name and mailing address to njwildlife@nac.net.

From more than 387 submissions first and second place winners were selected in five grade categories. Below are the 2002 winners and links to their winning artwork.
