As an additional step in controlling and treating the disease (Furunculosis ) that has affected a section of the Pequest Trout Hatchery, the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife will begin its Fall Trout Stocking Program one week earlier than scheduled. The move is another component of the Division's efforts to eliminate this disease at the facility. (See www.njfishandwildlife.com/news/2013/fallstock13.htm for more information.)

Therefore, fall stocking commences Tuesday, October 1 in 2013 (the stocking has begun in the second week of October the past two years). Approximately 20,000 two-year old brook and rainbow trout, averaging 14-16 inches, are stocked in 17 streams and 15 ponds and lakes over a two-week period. Streams are stocked during the first week, and ponds and lakes are stocked during the second week. All fish were raised at the division's Pequest Trout Hatchery.

The stocking boundaries for streams are the same as in the spring (see the current Freshwater Digest for information). There are no closed dates during the fall stocking period. Updates to the fall stocking program will be posted as necessary.

UPDATES

10/7/13 - Due to low water and high water temperature conditions in some waters, the Week 2 fall trout stocking is being moved back two days to Thursday and Friday, October 10 and 11. All previously scheduled waters will be stocked with the number of trout previously allotted.

10/2/13 - The Flat Brook from Crigger Road downstream to Roy Bridge, except for Federally owned portions such as the Blewitt tract, will be stocked on Thursday, October 3 as scheduled. The Walpack Valley Campground and the Walpack Wildlife Management Area (Haney's Mill) will also be stocked.

9/26/13 - Fall Trout Stocking Moved Up One Week To Begin Tuesday, October 1

9/17/13 - Due to disease affecting a portion of the Pequest raceway system, the 1,000 extra-large 3-year old trout typically included in the fall stocking will not be available in 2013. For details see the NJ DEP news release at www.state.nj.us/dep/newsrel/2013/13_0092.htm.
