For more information contact:

According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife, deer permits will be issued through a lottery for eight Special Area zones this year (Zones 38, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, 64, 67). The application period for these zones is August 1-31, 2002.

Individuals interested in applying for these zones should visit the Division's website at www.njfishandwildlife.com for applications and associated information. The information will also be included in the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Digest, Hunting Season Issue available at division offices and license agents in mid-August. Hunters should note that the "Deer Permit Supplement" that previously contained the mail-in lottery applications will not be printed this year and that the website and Digest are the only means to apply for a Special Area permit. For those who applied for any of these zones last year, permit applications will automatically be mailed to them during the week of July 29.

The Special Areas are: Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Forsythe NWR (this encompasses three zones), Supawna Meadows NWR, Atlantic County Park System, Monmouth Battlefield State Park and High Point State Park.

All other zone permits (except military areas) will be sold at license agents listed in the Digest and on our website beginning September 7. Unlike like last year, permits will be available at license agents until the last day of the deer-hunting season, which is February 15, 2003. Permit quotas for most zones are higher than the number of permits issued for previous seasons in many zones. Therefore, permits for most zones will be available at license agents throughout the entire season.

Military Special Area zones will be issued directly through the military installations.
