September 20, 2002
According to the Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife, September 28 is the opening day of the shotgun and muzzleloader seasons for gray squirrel.
Shotgun hunting hours are sunrise to ½ hour after sunset (except on Nov. 9 when opening time is 8 a.m.) with a daily bag limit of 5 squirrel. Muzzleloader hours and bag limit are the same as for shotgun, however, a rifle permit is required and hunting may occur only on designated areas. All squirrel hunters should note that firearm hunting is not permitted on Nov. 8 on those Wildlife Management Areas designated as Pheasant and Quail Stamp Areas.
For more information on designated muzzleloader squirrel and Pheasant/Quail Stamp areas, refer to page 50 of the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Digest, August hunting season issue.
