DEP Reminds Recreational Crabbers to Submit Survey Forms

March 22, 2006

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reminding everyone who obtained a non-commercial crab pot license in 2005 to submit the Voluntary Crab Pot Reporting Form. The forms are very important as the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Administration Ė which consists of the Bureau of Marine Fisheries and the Bureau of Shellfisheries within the DEPís Division of Fish and Wildlife Ė is beginning to collect information on the recreational blue crab fishery throughout the state.

This voluntary survey is used to help the Department get important information about the fishery such as the number of trips taken, fishing location, number of crabs caught and kept, as well as other information. The data collected from the survey program will help DEP make resource management decisions for the viability of the crab resource.

Recreational crabbers who obtain a non-commercial crab pot license are asked to fill out a log after each trip with the appropriate information, and then return the forms at the end of the season to the DEPís Division of Fish and Wildlife at its Nacote Creek Research Station.

Anyone who obtained their license from a vendor should have received a reporting form when they purchased their license.

This year, everyone will get a reporting form when they purchase their license in person or online.

The Marine Fisheries Administration started a number of other recreational blue crab surveys in 2005, with plans to continue these surveys in 2006. Information on these other research surveys can be found on the DEPís Division of Fish and Wildlife Web site at

More information about blue crabs can be found on the Divisionís Web site in the article, Blue Claws: Crabbing in New Jersey.

The reporting form can be downloaded from (pdf, 10kb).
